SACRA/PROFANA announces its third annual Choral Composition Contest.
HISTORY: Championing the music of living, breathing composers is a cornerstone of SACRA/PROFANA’s mission. In 2009, the ensemble launched its first Composition Contest; the winning piece, A Grass-Green Pillow by Minnesota composer Joshua Shank was performed by SACRA/PROFANA in various venues througout San Diego, and has become a staple in the ensemble’s repertoire. In 2010, Stephen Feigenbaum’s Claire de Lune was selected as the winning entry, and featured prominently in SACRA/PROFANA’s second season. Both pieces will be included on SACRA/PROFANA’s Debut CD, due out in March of 2012.
CRITERIA: Composers of all ages and nationalities are encouraged to submit original compositions for mixed choir. Length should be under 6 minutes long, although multi-movement works with movements under 6 minutes will also be considered.
Preferred voicing is SATB, with or without keyboard accompaniment (divisi up to SSAATTBB acceptable). Works for SA (div. up to SSAA) or TB (div. up to TTBB) will also be considered, as will works with light instrumental accompaniment (3 players or less) other than keyboard.
AWARD: SACRA/PROFANA will award a $300 cash prize to one composer, and will feature the winning piece in 2012 in both a live performance and a professional recording. We reserve the right to withhold the award if none of the submissions meet our criteria for performance.
TO APPLY: Submissions must include all of the following to be considered:
1. Two copies of the full score.
2. Proof of permission to use text for pieces using text not in the public domain.
3. $25 submission fee. Composers submitting more than one piece should add $10 per additional piece. Checks can be made payable to SACRA/PROFANA
4. Complete contact information, accompanied by composer’s date of birth.
Live or MIDI recordings are also welcome, though not required. Please send all materials by December 31st, 2011 (postmark date) to the following address:
